U Akron closed Weds, join us Sunday at HB
Join us instead on Sunday at 1 p.m., plenty of time before the Super Bowl. We had 14 at HB last week. It's good. Don't miss out.
...I called Akron's pool directly to confirm. A manager said despite having their doors open during the day, they are closing early this evening and special activities (like water polo) have been canceled.

More info for Akron on Weds, HB on for Sunday
Akron has confirmed that we are invited this Wednesday. Here is additional info:
- Start time is 8 p.m., end time is 10 p.m.
- Location is the University of Akron's Ocasek Natatorium
- 402 Carroll Street Akron , OH 44325
Parking is in the adjacent lot of the field house (large lot in two sections, you will see a huge "Fear the 'Roo sign," note any posted parking restrictions)
Enter the pool through the side entrance (not the main rec center entrance, they will hassle you at the main entrance...trust me)
There is a desk, if asked, let them know you are a community member playing water polo.
HB is on by popular demand on Sunday at 1 p.m. before the Super Bowl. Based on responses, turnout should be good, so join us.
Weds 1/28 moved to Akron
We are moving this Wednesday to Akron as we will not be able to practice at HB this week. Akron will be there, so definitely a chance to get some scrimmage play in.
Also, please give me some quick feedback on Sunday at 1 p.m. in light of the Super Bowl at 6:30 p.m. I would like to keep our time, so please let me know your preference, if I get a few responses (which I anticipate) in favor of keeping Sunday, we will have it and I will let everyone know.

Season opener in Rochester brings first win of 2009
CWPC traveled to Webester, N.Y. (suburb of Rochester) for a weekend tournament Saturday and Sunday. Despite a short bench, the 9-player squad finished 1-3, rounding out the weekend with a victory over Niagara.
On Saturday the team faced Laval, a club from Quebec, and Ontario-based KW Inferno. The experienced Laval club was a major challenge for CWPC featuring a strong pressure defense and strong play on offense at the two-meter position.
After suffering a rout to Laval, CWCP recovered with a strong effort against Inferno.
Playing in a more controlled tempo, CWPC remained within two goals through three quarters to Inferno, before the team ran out of gas in the fourth quarter en route to a loss. A Sunday morning game against eventual tournament champion, Shadows, also of Ontario, mirrored the game against Laval, with counterattack goals crippling Cleveland early in the game.
The final game against Niagara displayed developing team chemistry and team play as CWPC used a combination of strong two-meter play on offense and stiffling half-court defense to hold Niagara to less than 10 goals.
CWPC was represented at Rochester by: Steve T., Steve. H, Carl, Brad, Camilo, Kevin, Bob B. (Canton), Brian B. (Canton) and Steph H (who played like a man).

A: Our membership is made up of men and women ranging in age from 16 to 50+ who live in Northeast Ohio, including Greater Cleveland, Akron and Canton.
Q: I have never played water polo before. Can I learn to play?A: Yes, CWPC welcomes new members. Water polo requires the ability to swim. Generally, you must be able to swim continuously for 8 lengths (200 yards) to be able to learn the game. At this time, we do not have a separate program for beginners, so new players learn by playing with more experienced players. This can be a challenge, but our members enjoy teaching new people.
Q: I have played water polo before, but I am no longer in good physical shape. Can I still play?A: CWPC members vary in level of conditioning, but the nature of water polo is such that fitness is a benefit to players. We encourage prospective members to observe a practice session to gain a sense of their ability level.
Q: How much does it cost to join? What fees are involved?
A: CWPC assesses quarterly dues. Currently, dues are $60 per quarter. Full-time students receive a discount to $30 per quarter.
Q: When and where are practices?
A: Our practice schedule varies depending on pool time, however we post a calendar and updates at clevelandwaterpolo.com.

- Cleveland State University, Robert F. Busbey Natatorium – 2420 Chester Avenue, Cleveland 44115
- Hathaway Brown School, Butler Aquatic Center – 19600 North Park Blvd., Shaker Heights 44122
A: Our members range in skill level from novice to former NCAA Division I water polo athletes. The main purpose of the club is to have fun, however the team strives to compete with master’s clubs nationally. Competition in tournaments is optional and not required of members.
